Over the Thanksgiving weekend the first riceharvesting combine in Canada brought artisan sake maker Masa Shiroki’s rice harvest in from his Abbotsford field.

Abbotsford now lays claim to the most northerly sake-rice production in the world.

The combine, imported from Japan (with its own engineer flown in from Hokkaido to run it) has made this year’s harvest so much easier. Last year rice bundles shot out of a small, Rototiller-like machine one at a time.
