We like to think that beauty and tranquility improve the flavor…

Hello all! Summer is well underway and the rice is loving the mix of warm weather and intermittent moisture. Since our last update the rice has grown considerably, and isn’t done yet. This phase of the growth cycle is still referred to as the ‘vegetative stage’, where the plants are growing taller and putting out leaves to maximize their future energy intake. The more successful the vegetative phase the more energy the plant can allocate toward reproduction, resulting in a better rice yield and better tasting rice and sake.

Compare this photo to our last post to see how much the field has filled in over the past month.

Looking forward, once the vegetative phase is finished, the reproductive phase is marked by the development of panicle, which is the branch that produces flowers and then develops rice after successful pollination.

The plants are continuing to grow larger, once fully grown the panicle will start to develop.

As always, if you have any questions regarding the rice farming please feel free to contact us by email or phone.

Until next time…
