Fall 2024 Newletter
I was a bit concerned that the rice growth would be delayed this year since it was slightly colder than last year. However, we managed to harvest the rice before the rainy season arrived. This year, we faced challenges due to many birds flying into the fields, which made our work more difficult. It was also a strong reminder of the awe-inspiring power of nature.
We cultivate our rice without using herbicides. When growing rice without herbicides, weeds can grow alongside the rice, absorbing nutrients that would otherwise go to the rice itself. For us, controlling weeds is a crucial challenge in herbicide-free rice cultivation, and we feel that, little by little, we are getting the hang of managing weeds effectively.
Next year, we’ll continue testing various methods and work towards developing rice cultivation techniques suited to the Fraser Valley region. We aim to share the deliciousness of BC rice with many people and will keep doing our best to achieve this goal.
